Day 4

Day 4
Latitude  15º 17.8 N
Longitude 61º 23.3W
Roseau, capital of the Commonwealth of Dominica
Log:  1169 nautical miles to date

We moored this morning at the small island of Dominica in the Caribbean.  We awakened to rain squalls and beautiful rainbows which quickly cleared into a beautiful 87º day!  The entire compliment of students, staff, lifelong learners and crew have been exploring this fantastic island all day.  With an average of 350 inches of rainfall annually, it is truly a rainforest, and was featured prominently in many of the scenes in Pirates of the Caribbean.  The population of 70,000 is 65% Roman Catholic, and this being Sunday, EVERYTHING was closed all day while families went to the beach after their morning mass.  We hiked and viewed the rainforest on volcanic peaks topping 4000'  And swam at a local beach.

  2. Loved Dominica when we were there a few years ago - especially Steven's friend, a wood/mask carver.
